Frequently asked questions

Why only up to 3999?
Standard Roman notation has no symbol beyond M (1000) without overline notation, so 3999 (MMMCMXCIX) is the conventional maximum.
How does subtractive notation work?
A smaller symbol before a larger one subtracts: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, CM = 900.
